Some of us have dedicated our careers to the cancer field, some of us have dedicated our careers to helping people use technology to improve their lives and some of us just like helping people. We’re really proud of our work and our team here at Navigating Cancer.
Meet Scott Grogan, one of our talented software engineers:
Briefly describe your role.
I’m a software engineer who focuses on providing tools that keep patients informed about their treatment plans and help them stay connected to their care providers.
Where do you find inspiration?
From my wife, a writer whose focus and dedication to her craft keeps me motivated to improve my own.
What’s your favorite technology and why?
Fitness trackers are awesome! I’ve had one for a couple of years, and while it hasn’t turned me into an elite athlete, it’s certainly made me more mindful of my day-to-day activity level and sleep habits. Being able to see how far I’ve gone after a long hike underscores the sense of accomplishment, and makes me want to do even more next time.
What’s your best life hack?
Make to-do lists, take notes on everything, and always use a pen and paper. Just the act of writing things down helps commit them to memory, and you’ll always have something to refer back to later.
Star Trek or Star Wars?
I have to give it to Star Trek for the sheer volume of quality content.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?
I make video games for a thrice-annual competition called Ludum Dare. Building a game from scratch in just 48 hours is a blast, but I love seeing what other participants did with their time, getting feedback, and using it to improve on my own entries for the next time.
Little-known fact about you that would surprise people?
I can’t recognize people’s faces, so when I meet people for the first time I try to find something unique to remember them by. Usually it works out, but I’ve been known to start conversations with strangers thinking I know them from somewhere else!
